The indirect mosaic technique is a practical and clean method for creating mosaic artwork, especially when you want a precise design or need to prepare the piece in advance before final installation. In this technique, the design is first built on a separate fiberglass mesh, which makes it easy to transfer and install the finished piece in its intended location.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Plan your design. Choose or draw the mosaic pattern on paper. This serves as your guide when gluing the tiles in place.

  2. Prepare the surface. Lay your design flat on a table. Cover it with a clear, smooth sheet of plastic, then place the fiberglass mesh on top. This way, the pattern is visible through the mesh, allowing you to position the tiles accurately.

  3. Glue the mosaic tiles onto the mesh. Arrange the tiles according to your design and glue them onto the mesh. Keep in mind that the mesh openings are about 4 mm wide, so very small tiles may not adhere well.

  4. Let the work dry thoroughly. Wait until the adhesive is completely dry and the tiles are firmly attached to the mesh before proceeding to the next step.

  5. Transfer the piece to its final location. Place sturdy cardboard or a similar support underneath the mesh and carefully lift the finished piece. This keeps the work flat and the tiles in place during the transfer.

  6. Attach the piece to the surface. Spread a suitable adhesive onto the final surface or wall. Gently press the fiberglass mesh onto the adhesive, ensuring it sticks evenly and securely.

  7. Finish by grouting. Once the adhesive has fully dried, you can grout the mosaic in the usual way. Grouting fills the gaps and gives the surface a smooth, finished look.
